Creating Psychologically Safe Spaces: Why Talk to Us Month Matters for VR Professionals

Every July, the Samaritans lead Talk to Us Month, a UK-wide campaign dedicated to encouraging open conversations about mental health and emotional wellbeing. For professionals working in Virtual Reality(VR)—a field that often intersects with therapy, training, and immersive experiences—this campaign is a timely reminder of the importance of psychological safety in our workspaces and client interactions.

Why It Matters

The immersive nature of VR can be transformative, but it also has the potential to surface deep emotional responses. Whether you're developing therapeutic environments, training simulations, or educational tools, it's crucial to ensure that users feel heard, supported, and safe.

According to the Samaritans, one in five people in the UK experience suicidal thoughts, yet many feel unable to speak out due to stigma. As VR professionals, we have a unique opportunity—and responsibility—to help break that silence.

How You Can Support "Talk to Us Month"

Here are three practical ways to align your work with the goals of this campaign:

1. Encourage Open Dialogue

Create space for clients and colleagues to express concerns, especially around returning to or staying in work. This could be as simple as asking, “How are you really doing?” or offering flexible debriefing sessions after emotionally intense VR experiences.

2. Use Active Listening and Signpost Support

Active listening means giving someone your full attention, reflecting back what you hear, and withholding judgment. It’s a skill that can be learned—and the Samaritans offer excellent listening tips to get started. If someone needs more support, signpost them to services like:

  • Samaritans –     Call 116 123 (free, 24/7)
  • Mind UK –     Mental health support and resources
  • NHS     Every Mind Matters – Tools and advice for mental wellbeing

3. Promote Peer Support and Mental Health Champions

Encourage the formation of peer support groups within your team or client base. Appointing a mental health champion—someone trained to listen and guide others to help—can make a big difference in normalising mental health conversations.

Final Thoughts

"Talk to Us Month" is more than a campaign—it's a call to action. In the fast-evolving world of VR, where innovation meets human experience, let’s ensure that empathy and emotional safety are part of the design.

Let’s talk. Let’s listen. Let’s support.
