EVENT DESCRIPTION

There are many factors to consider when supporting armed forces veterans or service leavers. Additionally, there is a vast network of support that can assist you to do this. Throughout the session we will look at the following key areas.

  • What is a veteran, and why people leave the armed forces.
  • Transition, including the impact that this may have on their lives and thinking.
  • Understanding transferrable skills from the military to civilian.
  • What support is available and what you can do to better support veterans.

Our speaker: Stuart Miller, Employability Skills Specialist/Director at SDM Training Services

Having served in the Royal Engineers and then HM Prison Service, I have experience of working in roles and environments that offer unique challenges. I also worked for RBLI delivering their highly successful LifeWorks employability course to veterans and the families of serving personnel. These experiences give me a great understanding of the impact that their careers and transition can have on veterans and their families. With knowledge of the military environments and roles, I can help them to identify their transferrable skills and overcome barriers that can prevent them from moving forward. By staying up to date with the vast range of organisations working in the military community, I can signpost towards support, training and funding that is specific to military veterans.
